Bidcock

The Bidcocke, and like them the Redshanke, that delight
Together still to be, in some small Reedy bed,
In which these little Fowles in Summers time were bred. (25.100–2)

It has been suggested that ‘bidcock’ may have been Drayton’s word for the water rail, a bird of the rail family found in wetlands across Europe, Asia and North Africa.
